How to make an origami Pterodactyl (Tadashi Mori)

How to make an origami Pterodactyl (Tadashi Mori)

Hello there everybody! I'm Tadashi Mori and in this video here I'll show you how to make the origami Pterodactyl.

It's my own design and I'm remaking this video because in the last video a lot of people couldn't make it.

So, I'm making a slower version of that video.

You don't need any special paper, just one square sheet of paper like this one.

And try to use a paper with, at least, 15 cm.

That will be about 6 inches.

So, let's start! Start by folding the paper in half.

Along the diagonal, like this.

Unfold the paper.

Now, you're going to fold the other diagonal.

And unfold the paper again.

Now, fold here this side of the paper, making this point go up this point and you're just going to pinch the middle, like this.

Now, make a fold from this point up to this point.

Fold it precisely, don't miss the point.

And the lines at this point should look like this.

Turn the model over.

And you're going to fold this point up to the crossing point here.

Unfold the paper and fold this point up to this point here.

Unfold the paper again.

Now, turn the model over and you're going to fold along the middle line.

Like this.

And fold this flap downward and do the same thing here, on the other side.

Now, fold this point here up to this point here.

Fold all the layers together.

Unfold the paper and now you're going to make a fold called ''Inside Reverse Fold''.

You just have to make this exact fold.

As you can see, you have all these lines.

These lines were made with the last fold we made Now, carefully, you're going to make a mountain fold along all these lines we made.

Carefully, keep track of this zig-zag fold.

And you're also going to make a mountain fold along the middle line.

Only up to this point.

So, once you fold a mountain fold along all these lines, you'll see that the paper will naturally make this shape here.

Now, make a valley fold along this line.

Also do the same thing here on this line.

And this is the ''Inside Reverse Fold''.

The ideia is that instead of fold one layer over another we folded all the layers to inside.

It's not easy to explain with words, but I hope you could understand.

Now, we're going to do the same thing here on the other side.

So, again, fold this layer downward, like this.

Fold strongly.

Unfold and you're going to make another ''Inside Reverse Fold''.

So, let me show you again.

Open the model a little bit and make a mountain fold along the zig-zag fold.

So, press here from the bottom part and reverse this fold.

And if you do it carefully, you'll see that all the folds naturally goes to the right direction.

Now, make here the valley folds.

Here and here.

And the model will look like this.

Now, fold one layer upward, like this.

Unfold.

Fold this side of the front layer, this point, up to the middle point and do the same thing here, on the other side.

Unfold both sides.

Now, carefully, you're going to fold the front layer from this point up to this point here.

And to do it, hold here this side of the paper, like this and fold this point up to the top part of th origami.

Now, fold strongly and unfold.

Now, do the same thing to the other direction.

And the model will look like this.

Now, pay close attention to the next step.

You're going to fold from this point up to this point here, only on the front layer, ok? So, carefully, fold make this fold and at the same time you're going to fold here these sides.

along this line we just made.

This one and this one here.

Pay attention, so you don't fold the wrong places, ok? And make here the fold, like this.

The model will look like this for now.

Now, carefully, press here the front part making a fold from this point up to this point here.

And the model will look like this.

Now, you're going hold here, this front flap and open in the middle, like this.

And the model will look like this.

Now, turn the model over and fold one layer upward.

Unfold and reverse this fold folding it to inside.

And the model will look like this.

Now, fold here this flap up to the middle line.

Like this.

Do the same thing here on the other side.

Unfold both sides.

Now, hold here this flap, like this.

And you're going to open the middle.

And the model will look like this.

Now, do the same thing here on the other side.

And the model will look like this.

Now, fold the bottom part of this front flap up to the middle line, like this.

Unfold and fold this small tip here upward while refolding the bottom part.

So, the model will look like this.

Do the same thing here on the other side.

Now, fold all these layers like this.

And on this layer you're going to fold this side of the paper up to the middleline.

And the next step is to going to be the most difficult part of this origami.

It's basically a reverse fold.

It's called ''Open Sink Fold''.

Let me show you slowly how to do it.

So, this line here is the fold we just made.

Right? So, if you open the model a little bit you'll see a line making this ''V'' shaped fold, and this line is here.

You have to inside reverse this fold.

And to do it you're basically making this part here, this part of the paper go to inside.

That's the ideia.

Now, let me show how to do it.

You're going to open the model a little bit.

And, carefully, pay close attention and fold along this line here.

You're going to make a mountain fold along all these lines.

So, first, press here the middle and let's start by making the top part, the ''V'' shaped fold.

It's going to look like this.

Now, press here the middle, and make this valley fold, carefully.

This one here and this one.

Now, you're going to make a mountain fold along the other ''V'' shaped fold, this one and this one here.

That's it.

The ideia is quite simple, you just had to open the model, hide these layers.

As you can see, everything is aligned here.

And close the model.

Now, you're going to do the same thing here, on the other side.

So, again fold up to the middle line.

Fold strongly, to make it easier for you to see thefolds.

Now, open the model a little bit.

make the mountain folds on the top part, press the middle and make the mountain folds on the bottom part.

And the model will look like this.

Once you understand how to make a ''Sink Fold'', this origami gets really simple.

Right? Now, turn the model over fold here one flap to the left, and we're going to do the same thing here.

So, you're going to make a sink fold along this small flap.

So, again fold the top part up to the middle line.

Unfold and make a sink fold.

This part is going to be a little bit more difficult.

Because it's small but it's exactly the same thing.

So, open the model a little bit.

Make a mountain fold along the ''V'' shaped fold.

Press the middle.

And fold the bottom part.

So, that's it.

I made another sink fold here.

As you can see, everything is aligned.

Now, fold the flaps to the right and do the same thing here, on the other side.

And the model will look like this.

Now, hold here this small flap like this, and open in the middle.

Now, let me zoom in here a little bit and you're going to fold this side of the paper up to the middle line.

Unfold.

Open here this part a little bit and fold this layer to inside.

Aligning it with the middle line.

Now, do the same thing here.

Now, do the same thing here, on the other side.

Like this.

Open the front layer a little bit.

And fold it to inside.

Now, do the same thing here, on the other layer.

So, open it like this.

Fold this side up to the middle line and do the same thing here on the other side.

And that's it.

The model will look like this.

Now, fold here the bottom part of this flap up to the middle line.

Do the same thing here on the other side.

Now, turn the model over spread the layers evenly.

The model should look like this.

So, as you can see, you have 2 layers here and 2 layers here.

Turn the model over again and fold the top part, but only these front layers downward, like this.

Now, turn the model over.

Fold here these 2 small flaps downward.

Fold here this flap making this middle line go up to this line here.

And do the same thing on the other side.

Now, you're going to fold all these layers backward, like this.

And fold one layer forward like this, so this part is going to be the mouth.

So, this part here is going to be the mouth and the head.

Now, you're going to fold everything in half, like this.

Now, carefully, you're going to fold making this line here go up to this line here.

So, it's going to be something like this.

But, as you can see, as you make this fold you're not going to fold the head, the head is going to move downward a little bit, like this.

Now, do the same thing here on the otherside and the model will look like this.

Now, just fold the wing downward.

The model is almost done.

Now, you have to open here, the mouth a little bit.

And we are going to pull here, these small layers from inside making the leg.

Now, you have to narrow the legs by folding it in half, like this.

Ok, so, let me show you again.

You just have to fold here the leg in half, like this.

And for that, you have to untrap a little bit of the bottom layer.

So, it's going to look like this.

Now, the last detail is to narrow the tail.

So, fold making this line here go up to the middle line.

And that's it.

Now, fold everything back.

And the model is done.

So, that's it.
